Afternoon Briefing — May 26, 2026

Redistricting Efforts Blocked. A federal court has blocked Alabama's plan for new congressional districts, stating the map was unfair to Black voters and discriminated by race. This ruling prevents Alabama from using the proposed redistricting map. Separately, a redistricting push in South Carolina failed after the state Senate rejected efforts to redraw congressional maps. South Carolina Republicans bucked Trump's push to gain more House seats, ensuring Clyburn’s seat survives for now.

Trump Administration Actions. The Trump administration has proposed non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) for federal employees. This measure aims to stop leaks from within the federal government. Trump wrapped up a 3-hour medical visit to Walter Reed, declaring that "Everything checked out PERFECTLY" after his physical exam. He announced his six-month physical went "PERFECTLY."

Supreme Court Rulings. The Supreme Court has rejected a lawsuit over commercial driver’s licenses for migrants. This decision also saw the Court decline to hear a Florida suit against other states concerning immigrant driver's licenses. Additionally, the Supreme Court reversed a ruling in an immigration judges’ free speech lawsuit. The Court sided with the Trump administration in this dispute over immigration judges.

Texas Senate Runoff. Senator Cornyn is working to keep his Texas Senate seat in a runoff election against Paxton. This contest is seen as the latest test of Trump's power, especially after Trump's snub of Cornyn. Cornyn and Paxton are going head-to-head in the Texas Republican Senate primary.
